Five green habits that actually change something in the city

No big words and no buying equipment. Five things you can do in an apartment on the fourth floor.

The most common question after a planting event is: what can I do when I get back home. Here are five things that need neither a yard nor money.

1. Water the tree on your street

A young sapling in its first three years dies from drought, not from cold. A bucket of water twice a week during the summer is the single biggest help you can give, and it costs nothing.

2. Separate glass first, then the rest

If you don't have the energy for full recycling, start with glass. It can be recycled endlessly, with no loss of quality, and it is the easiest to separate.

3. Compost in your apartment, with no smell

Vermicomposting in a closed container works on a balcony and in a pantry. There is no smell if you stick to the rule of no meat and no dairy.

4. Buy seasonal, from the farmers' market

A tomato in January has traveled thousands of kilometers or grown in a heated greenhouse. Buying seasonal cuts that cost more than any other habit in the kitchen.

5. Report a neglected space

This is the only habit that asks for nothing but a single message. If you see an empty plot in your neighborhood, a dead lawn, or a spot where a tree was cut down and a new one wasn't planted, let us know. We go out, take a look, and if it's possible, we plant.
