What the satellite sees, and what it does not
How this data is made
The VIIRS instrument on polar satellites measures the heat radiation of the ground in a pixel of about 375 meters. It reports a point when it is much warmer than its surroundings, so the count can include flares, landfills and open fires too.
Why we merge the points
The satellite sees one large fire as several neighboring hot pixels. We count all points within about two kilometers as a single hotspot, because otherwise the number would be many times higher than the real count of fires.
What the power in megawatts means
That is the heat radiation power the satellite measures, added up for the whole hotspot. It roughly tracks the size and intensity of the fire, but it is not an official estimate of the burned area.
When a fire is not shown
The satellite passes over our territory a few times a day. A fire that starts and is put out between two passes, or is hidden by thick cloud and smoke, will not be recorded here. So this is not a substitute for calling 193.
