How to read the water level
Why the number is sometimes negative
The zero on the gauge is not the riverbed, but an agreed point set when the station was built. A level of minus 40 means the water is 40 centimeters below that point, and at many stations this is a perfectly normal state, not drought.
This is not a flood warning
We show only the measured level and the change. Regular and emergency flood defense is declared by the Republic Hydrometeorological Service, and for such warnings always follow the official source.
What a tree-lined bank changes
Tree roots hold the soil, so the bank erodes more slowly during high water. A belt of vegetation along the river slows surface runoff and holds back some of the material that would otherwise end up in the water.
How fresh the data is
RHMZ publishes a daily report with the morning measurement. We fetch it several times a day, so the refresh time shows when we last checked the source, not when the river was measured.
